HOW DO I SPEND MY 24 HOURS? ARE YOU GETTING VALUE FOR YOUR TIME?

HOW DO I SPEND MY 24 HOURS? ARE YOU GETTING VALUE FOR YOUR TIME?

TIME IS FREE, BUT IT IS PRICELESS

YOU CAN’T OWN IT, BUT YOU CAN USE IT

ONCE YOU’VE LOST IT, YOU CAN NEVER GET IT BACK

Harvey Mackay

Time is the most important resource that you have at your disposal. What makes it so valuable is the fact that it will run out! So what are you doing with the time you have right now? How you spend your time is linked to your purpose passion and your WHY? When you don’t have these identified you will use your time in an ineffective manner.

We are advised to live our life like you are contributing to your Eulogy. I don’t intend to be morbid but to remind you of two things;

  1. Your time is not infinite; it will end
  2. What impact does your time on earth have?

I am a firm believer that nobody was born in vain. Everyone is unique and has a unique contribution to the universe and the general scheme of things. Every little contribution is needed (a need; is something necessary) to create the whole. You need to play you role to actualise the purpose of your existence. Moreover, what you do has an impact on your environment which includes your social and physical environment. It is up to you to decide whether the impact will be: Positive or Negative!  Meaningful or Irrelevant!  Forgettable or Memorable!

So let’s go back to how you use your time. This varies from person to person. The key thing is to account for your time to yourself. In particular, your time should be spent meaningfully and deliberately. We have 3 segments in our 24 hour day. Note: the hours do not need to be sequential but cumulative.

  1. 8 hours SLEEP
  2. 8 hours WORK
  3. 8 hour ?

I would like us to focus on the C portion of your day. What do you do when not working or asleep. What motivates you and guides on how you spend the C portion of your day? This is the time when you grow, build relationships, build your character and impact on the world. Some people have arranged their life so that the B and C portions are mixed up. This is common for entrepreneurs or people who follow their passion.

What is the value of your time is a factor that should influence how you are spending your time. As a lawyer I value my working day at an hourly rate. As an employee you may value your time at a pro rata of your monthly or weekly salary or wage. As an entrepreneur I value my time in terms of cash flow and customers. Do you measure the value of your time according to what you receive? What do you receive?

Money,

Recognition,

Love,

Happiness,

Achievement,

Impact on others

So which of the above is valuable to you? In which order? These are the questions you need to ask yourself on how to use the B and C part of your day? What am I getting out of it? What you get out of it is a facet of the value that your time has. So are you just about Money? Love?  Pleasure? Recognition? Love? Achievement? Impact?  A combination of some or all?

I spend my C section of my life on ( as an entrepreneur my B and C are mixed up) ;

  1. Personal reflection: I have a conference with ME MYSELF AND I and gauge how I am achieving my life purpose and how you do things better. My WHY?
  2. Family and Friends: I take time to work on my relationships as they give me love and happiness)
  3. Community: e.g. service, engagement, participation. This includes church
  4. Reward myself: the infamous ME TIME I spend time doing in things that give me pleasure and satisfaction e.g. hobbies, relaxation, reading, arts, music
  5. Personal growth: this is where I use and sharpen my passion and skills. Spend time with my mentor, capacity building, networking, innovation, adventure and many more.

WHERE YOU ARE GOING TO SPEND YOUR TIME AND ENERGY

IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION YOU GET TO MAKE

Jeff Bezor

We all have a purpose that has an impact on the common good. You contribute to this by your time. I encourage everyone to take some time to think about how they are spending their time and work towards spending time on what gives you the greatest value and impact. Being deliberate on how I use my time has helped me enjoy how I spend my time. Choose what is important and spend more time on it. Enjoy my life and be balanced and happy.

Final shot: When someone gives you their time they value you! Reciprocate!
